Although still a work in progress, Ace of Spades is gathering fans. The game’s similarities to Minecraft are evident in both game play and screenshots. Players will notice that Ace of Spades features pixilated artwork much like that featured in Minecraft. Team combat in Ace of Spades provides a new twist to this war game, however. The focus shifts from construction to battle, and player guides warn against spending too much time and energy on building as much of the fun comes from the destruction of opponents’ structures.
Although it can be a drawback to play in a game world that isn’t quite finished, Ace of Spades comes with the benefit of regular updates. Players also experience the opportunity to create their own battles, and Ace of Spades brings tons of fun to LAN parties where as many as 32 individuals can play at a time. Gamers that enjoy both strategy and action will enjoy the game’s unique balance between action and tactical maneuvers.
A few significant problems still need to be worked out of the current version of Ace of Spades. Changing a player name is unnecessarily complicated. Also, battles can often carry on far too long. Many controls and features of the game are counter-intuitive as well, so use of a user guide is essential.
