Americas Army is a tactical shooter developed by the United States Army. It attempts to make the combat experience as accurate as possible. The game is primarily focused on squad-based play with several single-player training missions made available to qualify for different ranks and combat roles. Americas Army will seem familiar to anyone who is used to squad-based arena games although the pace is distinctly different. Gameplay tends to be slightly slower and more tactical. Matches can involve up to 12 players on each team.

Players start as a recruit in Americas Army. The first objective is to complete a single-player boot camp. The boot camp has two purposes. The first is to acquaint players with all the controls necessary to move, shoot and perform other actions in the game. The second purpose is to introduce players to some of the real-world core values of the Army. This is done mostly through voice-over speeches from non-player characters.

Players can also take a number of optional training courses in the game in order to acquire new skills. Anyone who wants the ability to act a medic and heal teammates will need to complete a multi-part medical training complete with a test at the end. Similarly, players can become special operatives by completing a variety of other tests like paratrooper training. This allows some customization of skills. Several weapons and tools in the game are locked based on the titles earned through training.

Americas Army is different from some other multiplayer online battle arenas because there are persistent elements between games. Players gain experience and move up in rank allowing for more access to different game rooms. Gameplay is very strategic. Players do not simply run out shooting. There are sometimes long firefights between stationary teams. The terrain and role of each player actually matters. Although it takes some getting used to, Americas Army provides a detailed and unique gaming experience with quality graphics.
