Video games have taken us to all sorts of strange and wondrous worlds, from medieval kingdoms to outer space. Unfortunately, few have had us go straight into the depths of the ocean. Aquaria changes that. Here, you take control of a mermaid named Naija as she explores the undersea labyrinths around her home and uncovers the history of her world. Over the course of her journey, she will swim through aquatic caverns, brave a seaweed forest, discover the ruins of ancient civilizations, and battle the husks of their corrupted gods.
Aquaria plays much like an old Metroid game, giving you free to rein to explore the wide-open world with minimal direction. Natural barriers block off progress in certain areas, and only by obtaining special songs will you be able to pass them. Some songs cause special effects to happen when sung while others transform Naija’s body and give her new abilities. One form allows Naija to swim against currents, while another makes her small enough to fit into narrow crevices. Using the right songs and forms is tantamount to solving the game’s puzzles and defeating its bosses, who are often puzzles in and of themselves.
In the end, Aquaria is a gorgeous adventure and a handy throwback to the games of yore. It doesn’t hold your hand, it lets you literally swim at your own pace. Anyone who wants to lose themselves in a colorful world owes it to themselves to check it out.
