Bitworld is an entertaining and action-driven dungeon crawler developed for the PC. One of the game’s quirks is its nostalgic, 8-bit pixelated environment, which is presented to the players in an unusual 3D form. For its soundtrack, the game offers a rather catchy and atmospheric tune that serves to add to the game’s old-school vibe.

Mastering the game’s controls is made simple thanks to the helpful in-game tutorial. New players shouldn’t have any problems diving right in and exploring the game; before they realize it, players will find themselves navigating through dangerous levels and fighting off deadly monsters with no problems at all. Upon starting a new game, your character can choose among three varying classes, each of which offers its own unique weapon and abilities. Selecting the archer class allows you to fire arrows at your enemies, along with granting you the brief cloaking ability. Choosing the knight class equips your character with a sword that not only attacks but blocks as well. Finally, joining the wizard class grants you the unique ability for shooting both fire and ice.

For every level you complete, a new and increasingly difficult level is randomly-generated for you to battle your way across. Since most of the maps look alike, they often prove too difficult to read and result in players becoming lost far too easily. Despite the initial novelty and fun experienced when playing the game for the first time, the enthusiasm soon wears off as the game’s repetitiveness sets in. While Bitworld offers some talented writing as accompaniment for its somewhat interesting plot, players will soon learn that it is all for naught. Serious fans set on discovering each detail of how the story plays out will be left with painfully empty hands upon learning that the game was created without an ending.
