The Call of Duty franchise is easily one of the most well known and beloved in the first person shooter genre. Their games are often huge sellers, breaking opening day records with sales numbers that are through the roof. Call of Duty: Black Ops is no different, and developers Treyarch do not disappoint.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set during the Cold War in the 1960s. The player takes on the role of various CIA backed black operations officers who are operating behind enemy lines.

The game has an intense story that moves fluidly amongst actual historical events. But as with most games in the franchise, the story mode is not that long. For the average Call of Duty or First Person Shooter player, Black Ops will offer about ten hours of story mode game play.

But like most FPS (first person shooter) games on the market, Call of Duty: Black Ops is not known for its single player content. The true shining gem of Black Ops is its online multiplayer. With dedicated servers, Black Ops delivers a consistent and usually lag free playing environment.

The greatest downfall when it comes to the online multiplayer offered by Call of Duty: Black Ops is the lack of level balancing. What this means for a new player that is, unless you have a group around your own level to play with, there is a chance you will be loaded onto a map with extremely high level players. This can be frustrating for those who are just starting out.

Truly the crowning glory of Call of Duty: Black Ops is the zombie mode. Armed with a simple weapon, players are tasked with surviving wave after wave of the walking dead. A higher score (gained from things like headshots) allows the player to purchase upgrades such as larger clips, and better weapons. Zombie mode showcases the best of Black Ops. The game play is fast moving and fluid, with very little lag time between clip reloads and waves. The soundtrack to the game adds a level of depth and intensity not usually seen in these style of games.

Any FPS shooter fan will enjoy Call of Duty: Black Ops, but a player that enjoys online multiplayer will get many more hours of enjoyment from the game. Treyarch has proven they are consistent with map pack, adding more replay value to the game at a decent price.
