"Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm" is perhaps the most unique first-person military shooter for the PC, serving as not only a humorous parody of the "Call of Duty" video games but also a sly advertisement for "Bulletstorm," a first-person shooter from the Polish development team People Can Fly.
In "Duty Calls," players assume the role of a generic American soldier ordered to infiltrate a secret Russian base and retrieve a nuclear bomb. The game consists of only one level, and most enemies display little or no interest in even fighting. Everything within the brief storyline, which lasts approximately five minutes, pokes fun at popular first-person military shooters, highlighting the absurdity of dramatic cut scenes, the silliness of ranking systems, and the overall repetitive nature of such games. As soon as the final villain surrenders and begs for mercy, the game triggers a promotional trailer for "Bulletstorm," which vows to bring the fun back to first-person shooters.
