One of the best aspects of GNU backgammon is that it is truly free software. Some users might feel that the GNU backgammon client is a bit on the bloated side. However, this is because it ships with both an ASCII engine and an optional graphical user interface. Players of the GNU chess program should already be quite comfortable with this installation method, but newer players might be a bit lost. It should also be noted that the software is still considered to be in the alpha stage of development. Interestingly enough, the First Internet Backgammon Server recommends the software for replaying and analyzing matches. It currently seems to play at the level of a championship flight tournament player, which is very impressive for software like this.
