Kane & Lynch: Dead Men was released in late 2007. It is a third person shooter but relies on a cooperative dynamic with the game’s dual protagonists. Player one always controls the death-row bound criminal Kane, while player two or the computer assumes control of his partner, the psychotic Lynch. Together, they battle through an action-filled caper of revenge, stolen money, family held hostage, hallucinations and murder.
This is a game of few pluses and a lot of minuses. It was a good idea – take the gritty crime drama of Grand Theft Auto, mix it with the run and gun action of Gears of War and then make it two-player. Unfortunately, the execution just isn’t there. Just from the basic mechanics, the game’s control and lackluster cover system make it a chore to play. The presentation is no great shakes either, with a hard to watch and harder to play split screen setup when playing with a friend, a plot full of one-note, unlikeable characters that fail to create sympathy or even interest and a short playthrough time.
Kane and Lynch does feature an excellent, riveting soundtrack and an imaginative, though limited, multiplayer mode. The whole thing is a good idea executed poorly overall. As with many titles that start as good ideas that just need work, gamers should just wait for the sequel.
