Rambo III was a major motion picture and the third installment in the popular movie series that starred Sylvester Stallone. The PC video game, which was originally produced for the Sega Master System, was released soon after the movie. The game was then produced for Sega Mega Drive and finally ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC.

The storyline of the game is similar to that of the movie: The player takes control of Vietnam Veteran and Green Beret John J. Rambo, who has been called out of retirement for one last mission. Rambo's former commanding Officer, Colonel Sam Trautman, is captured in Afghanistan. Interestingly, in the game, Afghanistan is controlled by the Soviet Union.

Most of the game is from a top-down perspective. Assisted by weapons including a machine gun, explosive arrows, mine detector and glow tube, the player must infiltrate a base guarded by armed soldiers while avoiding mines and several other traps in an effort to save Colonel Trautman. This game bears a striking resemblance to the original Metal Gear and Operation Wolf video games, and it evokes a sense of nostalgia that is common with most 8-bit or 16-bit games.
