Video gamers from the 1990s have surely heard the name of Sonic the Hedgehog, the famous speedy blue rodent who battles the infamous evil genius Dr. Eggman. These beloved characters have continued to star in games up to the present day, sometimes getting a little visual makeover through the years but always staying true to the games' fun, adventurous nature.
In most Sonic games, the object is to travel through lushly designed levels called "zones", collecting golden rings and other power-ups while destroying Dr. Eggman's robots and freeing the small animals trapped inside. Even though some games only feature Sonic himself as a playable character, a fair number of games also allow the playability of Sonic's friends and acquaintances, including Tails the two-tailed fox, Knuckles the Echidna and a female hedgehog name Amy Rose. Sometimes Rouge the Bat, Shadow the Hedgehog, a detective agency known as the Chaotix and others also get into the act.
Some games, instead of being more standard platform fare, switch up the formula in various ways. Sonic Spinball is a game where Sonic bounces through several pinball-type zones. Sonic Adventure features unfolding storylines and goals for six different characters, while Sonic Heroes has the player control teams of three instead of one lone character. Still others, including Sonic Riders and Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing, are racing games with Sonic twists.
Whether your pleasure leans more towards classic or modern Sonic, or if you just like anything that's a Sonic game, there's something here for every Sonic fan. From the oldie but goodie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, remade in HD, to the recent, dynamic Sonic Generations, and assorted titles in between, there's a little of everything. There are even several popular fan-made games and tributes, such as Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Sonic Fan Remix.
