The independent game scene is not normally known for turning out the most visually impressive titles out there. It’s for this reason why Studio Trophis’ the white chamber is especially amazing. Visually, the game is a marvel, with backgrounds that are both beautifully and gruesomely drawn, and a myriad of animated cutscenes that wouldn’t be out of place in a professional anime production. The sound is equally top-notch, with music that ranges between brooding to downright unsettling. The voice work is also surprisingly talented in both its English and German tracks.

However, production values are only half the point to an adventure game. Thankfully, both the story and gameplay of the white chamber deliver. It may start out with a hated cliché featuring an amnesiac protagonist, but things quickly get weird as you have her explore the abandoned space station where she’s stranded.

Like all adventure games, there are plenty of puzzles to solve. By and large, most of them strike a proper balance, requiring sound logic to solve without being too obvious. Many are also creative too. One involves taking control of a robot in order to put out a fire, while another has you assemble a rotten corpse.

With its horrific and atmospheric visuals, cool story, and intuitive puzzles, the white chamber deserves a definite look for adventure fans searching for something to keep them up at night. Best of all, it’s completely free!
