You have to get passengers and various loads to their destinations in a certain time period and control the train on the tracks without making any mistakes. Another thing to keep in mind while playing is that you have to obey the rules of driving. You can't speed, and you can't take any shortcuts that will make your trip shorter. In free play, you can pretty much drive on the tracks and figure out the best ways to maneuver the gears and manage the train, which will help when you're in career mode.
