Viscera Cleanup Detail is a fun 3D game that flips the script on the traditional FPS game.

You’ve seen it before: a space station where leading-edge genetic experiments are underway. Something goes wrong. Fail-safes fail. Monsters are on the loose and killing scientists, and bad-ass space marines are inbound to chew bubble gum and kick ass.

The difference this time is that you’re not the space marine. You’re a janitor who works for the space station, and when you get there, the heroes have already completed their mission. Your job is to clean up the mess they’ve left behind: blood, guts, appendages and more.

Viscera Cleanup Detail is what you might call a janitorial simulation in space, but it’s also a physics sandbox. Cleaning up can actually be a rewarding challenge, but if you don’t feel like cleaning up, don’t. Fling gore, use your equipment in surprising ways and make even more of a mess.

The game can be played in a single-player mode, and it also has a local-coop so that two can play on the same computer in split-screen. Its most popular mode, however, is multiplayer, which allows up to a whopping 32 people to connect to a privately hosted served from across the Internet. Cleanup or mayhem with several or more people is just a tremendous blast.

Viscera Cleanup Detail is at its best when you’re on voice chat and playing with buddies. Of course, that’s true for a lot of co-op games. As a single-player game, it’s innovative and worth experiencing but may lack the content, progression and carrots to keep you coming back.

Pros

  • A janitorial simulation… in space!
  • Or just make a mess in this physics sandbox
  • Multiplayer and split-screen co-op modes

Cons

  • May lack lasting appeal as a single-player game
